IBC Musings: Chris Sansom, CaptionHub
Chris Sansom of CaptionHub will be introducing his company's frame accurate cloud subtitling to IBC2017.
Name: Chris Sansom
Job Title: Business development director.
Number of IBCs you¹ve attended: This will be my fifth.
Flying, driving or train-ing to IBC this year?
Flying into Schiphol and then train-ing in.
What is your goal for this year¹s IBC show?
Our cloud platform provides the ability to create subtitles and closed captions fast and easily. We integrate the latest in speech recognition technology to automate an initial pass and once tidied up can export perfectly timed subtitles.
Up until now however, frame accuracy in the cloud has been a real challenge and whilst we have been close, without being 100% our software has not been quite right for the broadcast sector.
We are super excited to say that we have now fully developed the ability to support frame accuracy for multiple frame rates. This is a huge stride forwards for cloud subtitling and we will be banging our drum about it at this year¹s show.
What will be the big tech trends at this year¹s IBC?
Cloud infrastructure is such a significant part of business these days with virtualised SaaS providers offering a wealth of cost effective and accessible tools. The expectation for end-to-end solutions from production to delivery is increasing. Hosting large amounts of hardware is no longer necessary with virtual servers and could technology providing scalability and flexibility. Combine this with the long-term importance of metadata and I think we will see a lot of novel technology covering both camps.
What piece of gear/software/platform do you wish someone would make?
Integration is a word on many people's lips and a generic, all-singing, all-dancing magical API to connect everything would be amazing. One API to rule them all?.
What¹s your fondest IBC/Amsterdam memory?
I have so many fond memories of my travels to Amsterdam, it¹s such a beautiful city. For me the best part of IBC is catching up with all my past colleagues and friends at the Beach Bar.
Can you speak Dutch?
Sadly, no. But the Dutch are such welcoming people that in all my travels around the Netherlands, I have always found everyone speaks perfect English - putting me to shame!
