IBC Musings: Brian Olson, NewTek
NewTek's Brian Olson thinks IBC2017 will see customers looking for good business solutions over fancy technologies.
Name: Brian Olson
Job Title: VP of product management
Number of IBCs you¹ve attended: I believe this is number 10.
Flying, driving or train-ing to IBC this year? Flying
What is your goal for this year¹s IBC show?
Continue to inform the market about NewTek¹s NDI IP video standard and products, while working with our partner companies to enable customers to revolutionise how they produce content in cost-effective, flexible, and scalable ways using end-to-end IP workflows that are available today.
What will be the big tech trends at this year¹s IBC?
I see more IP video, 4K, 8K, and HDR, a bigger focus on digital delivery, a continued emphasis on doing virtual and augmented reality with gaming engines, and a real hunger from customers for solutions that make good business sense, not just for expensive technology.
What gear/software/platform do you wish someone would make?
A video editor that was both easy-to-use and functional. The products that are out there thus far haven¹t been able to do that. The "easy" products get the job done, but when you try to do fine cutting, it¹s like doing it with a chainsaw while wearing mittens.
What¹s your fondest IBC/Amsterdam memory?
Taking my first nighttime boat tour on the canals with one of my co-workers, being starving, and eating way too much of the free cheese onboard.
Can you speak Dutch?
No, but I sang Dutch karaoke once and was told I had no accent (because I¹m from the U.S. Midwest, apparently).
